Modern gardeners are more and more interested in grape varieties of foreign selection. But not all varieties bred abroad will produce abundant and healthy crops in Russia, Ukraine or Belarus. But the Ruta variety is distinguished not only by the size of the berries, but also by its high winter hardiness. Let's talk in more detail about this variety.

History of selection of the Ruta variety

Ruta variety was bred by breeder Vitaliy Zagorulko in the Zaporizhia region of Ukraine. The parents of this grape are the varieties Talisman and Kishmish radiant.

Ruta grapes acquired its high winter hardiness and a tendency to overgrowth from the Talisman variety.

From the Talisman, the Ruta variety also received high transportability of berries and their long shelf life.

But the color and shape of the berries went to Rute grapes from the Kishmish radiant variety.

The Kishmish Luchisty variety also presented its sugar content and acidity to Rute grapes.

For a long time, Ruta grapes were not widely known in Russia, but since 2015, more and more gardeners plant this variety on their sites.

Description of Ruta grapes

Ruta grapes are a very tall plant, with a small number of side vines - stepsons. In this connection, the plant does not need to be standardized. The leaves of the grapes are large and wide, having five blades.

The plant has rapidly and abundantly growing vines that mature almost completely

The flowers of this variety are female, so it is better to plant Arcadia grapes next to it, which will perfectly pollinate Ruta's flowers. And you should also be prepared for the fact that the excessively fast growth of the shoots of Ruta will interfere with the pollination of its flowers.

The berries themselves are large, in shape resembling an oval or ellipse. Collected in large and medium-loose clusters, the berries have a bright grape flavor with a light muscat sweetness.

Berries have a beautiful transition from delicate yellow to a bluish-raspberry hue.

Berries have medium-sized seeds and tend not to crumble from the bush for a long time.

Proper planting of Ruta grapes

In order for the Root grape bush to grow healthy and bear fruit abundantly, you need to choose the right place for planting.

  1. The place should be lit by the sun for about 10 hours a day.
  2. The landing site should be located on the south side of all nearby buildings.

For grapes of this variety planting by the method of trenches is desirable. Therefore, you need to dig a trench 60 cm deep and along the ditch we place strong trellises that can be independently made of metal pipes and wire. We place two-meter pipes at a distance of 2 meters from each other.

Ruta grapes are also well clamped on arched supports, you only need to maintain the correct distances

The grapes themselves should sit according to the following pattern: row spacing - 3 m, between the bushes the distance should be 2.2 - 2.5 m.

The best time for planting Ruta is considered spring, until the buds are fully open. If the seedlings were purchased in the fall, you need to gently nip them before the spring season.

Immediately before planting, we prepare the following fertilizer mixture:

Fertilizernumber
Superphosphates70 g
Potassium chloride50 g
Humus1 bucket

For each dug meter, trenches spread about 1 bucket of the prepared fertilizer mixture. Then the soil must be thoroughly loosened. The next step is to put the seedling of the Ruty variety in the center of the trench, strictly observing the planting scheme.

Carefully straighten the root system of the plant

At the end of the planting, the seedling should be sprinkled with earth. The soil around the grape bush is crushed by hands. Then we water and mulch (it is possible with sawdust), in order to preserve the moisture of the soil substrate.

5 Golden Ruta Care Rules

In order for the Ruta variety to yield a large crop, 6 simple rules of care must be followed.

  1. Trenches with grapes of this variety must be watered with a certain strict periodicity. For example, the soil in the area where the Ruta variety is planted dries out once a week, then watering is carried out once a week, so that the ground is always moist, but not wet.

To facilitate grape care, drip irrigation can be extended along the trench

  2. Root grape needs regular loosening.

An exhausting cultivation procedure may not be carried out as often if you mulch the soil with sawdust or bark

  3. At the "pea" stage, we form young grape plants using pruning, focusing mainly on the volume of fruit that has begun to set. This procedure will eliminate the lack of overgrowth.

The main task of forming at the "pea" stage is to give young grapes the opportunity to spend most of their energy on fruit growth

  4. We cut off old bushes, leaving about 55-60 eyes, so the grapevine is not threatened with fatliquoring.

Anti-aging pruning should be done in the spring, before buds open

  5. 2 times a season we carry out preventive treatment of Ruta bushes from diseases.

In the spring, after the descent of snow, grapes must be treated against diseases and pests

Gardeners reviews

Re: Ruta I had the first year of fruiting, the clusters were small. However, now we can definitely say the following: 1. Indeed, a very large growth force (root-growing bush), but at the same time, a weak stepson formation, which facilitated green operations. 2. Good resistance to diseases (against the background of conventional preventive treatments), the tick is not affected. 3. The 1st crop appeared already in the 2nd year of vegetation, with a total mass of not more than 300 g. Given the enormous growth power of the bush, the whole was left, which did not affect the further intensive development of the bush. 3. A very early ripening period - I have on a par with Tason, in late July. At the same time, beginning from the 3rd decade of July, there was a really rapid ripening: literally in a week the colored, but absolutely inedible berries acquired a high sugar content (judging by taste) and then they also began to ripen intensively (sugar began to go over the top). 4. Berries of a beautiful form and interesting, amber-dark pink in color, large enough for the 1st year (10-12 g). Long stored on the bush without loss of marketability and taste. Taste without shades, but quite good. So I hope that Ruta will not let me down this year and confirm her initial characteristics.

Ruta in my area for three years, the first fruiting. She perfectly endured the last two snowless winters, she has good growth force, and there were no problems with standard treatments for diseases. Pollination last year was problematic and there was peas, and not all the clusters were well executed, average weight 200-400g. Ripened quite early, on August 2-3 it was ready, wasp like. With good sugar it had a yellow-pink color, I decided to watch and left some of the clusters on the bush. Last season, due to the intense heat, it created problems with painting on my site in pink-painted forms, and Ruta overdid it for about 10 days and gained a bright pink color. Her taste is harmonious, her flesh is thin, her skin is not felt when eating. The first impression of Ruta is positive, I continue to observe ...

So, Ruta grapes have large and tasty grapes that are well stored. And also this variety of Ukrainian selection is quite simple to plant and care. After a detailed study of the Ruta variety, it becomes clear why it is becoming more and more popular among both experienced gardeners and novice growers.
