A brightly flowering and unpretentious perennial - geranium Rosanna - firmly occupies the position of a favorite indoor and garden flower. A plant of the century in 2013, the flower was named by representatives of the Royal Society of Florists of Great Britain. The most popular is only pion-shaped geranium (pelargonium), as well as such a novelty of European selection as pink-shaped geranium.

Flower description

In 1989, two completely different types of garden geraniums crossed at a flower husband by the name of Rosanna and Donald Watererer in a completely random way. The resulting copy acquired completely unique features that attracted the public very much.

Each bush is a very overgrown ground cover plant with numerous shoots, the length of which can reach 1 m. The bush itself rises above the bed only 30-50 cm. Rosanne geranium is not planted densely, only 3-4 copies per 1 m².

What does geranium Rozanne look like

It is known that a new species was obtained by crossing a large-flowered herbaceous Himalayan geranium (Geranium Himalayense) and a varied variety of Wallich geranium (Geranium Wallichianum Buxton's Variety). A plant with this description went on sale thanks to the Blooms of Bressingham nursery in 2000.

For your information! Original copies of the Rosanne hybrid geranium in Europe are sold at an average price of 7.5 euros per item.

The flower, like pink pelargonium, has a large size (up to 5 cm in diameter) and a bell-blue hue, in which there may be a purple tone and a white tint in the core. On the petals up to five purple strokes. The cooler the weather, the darker the halo tone. The stems are long, lying. Leaflets of a strongly dissected jagged shape, when touched, emit a strong pleasant aroma.

Common varieties of garden geraniums Rosanna

Among the most popular varieties developed by breeders based on Rosanne geraniums are the following:

  • Azure Rush Corolla has a pale purple hue with an almost white core. The bush from the classic Rosanna is more compact (height up to 41 cm, width - up to 70 cm). The diameter of the flower is up to 6 cm. It blooms from May to October;
  • Lilac Ice. It was not for nothing that the variety was called Purple Ice; flowers with a diameter of up to 2.5 cm have a cold blue tint, which can change depending on the weather and air temperature. Compact bush an average of 30-50 cm tall. Prefers partial shade, blooms from June to July.

Demand for seedlings or seeds of garden geraniums is only increasing. Already, the range of large and well-known nurseries is impressive with a variety of varieties and varieties:

  • geranium ballerina;
  • ashen, or gray;
  • Dalmatian
  • Cambridge geranium (Cambridge);
  • Cantabrian.

A real hit is a golden hue on the leaves or flowers, as well as the terry edges of the petals. The buds can be in the form of mini-roses or tulip-shaped. Foliage can take a pale green light shade, more saturated as an apple, and also dark to chocolate.

Planting and caring for Rosanna geraniums

Garden perennial geranium - planting and care in the open ground

The beauty of this perennial is that it can be grown anywhere: in the garden, on flower beds, in containers and flowerpots, on the windowsill. The main condition is at least 6 hours a day of bright light.

Temperature

Perennial home-grown geraniums can grow for many years in the garden without requiring close attention. In summer, it tolerates heat up to 30 ° С, and in winter - frost up to −28 ° С.

Lighting

The place for planting is chosen so that the brightest rays of the sun fall on the flower in the morning and in the afternoon. Shrubs are best at noon at noon. In this case, the petals will not fade.

Watering

In open areas, bushes are watered as the soil dries. It is believed that garden geraniums are hygrophilous, but poorly tolerates waterlogging. If the plant is transplanted into a pot, then watering is carried out through a tray.

Spraying

Spraying Rosanne geraniums is not required. Splashing water on leaves during hot weather can cause stains. Petals with drops on them will inevitably receive burns.

Humidity

Dry sultry air will not harm the perennial. It is best for him with an air humidity of about 50-60%. But even with prolonged damp weather, there will not be much harm, most importantly, not to overdo it with watering.

Priming

To the soil, its chemical composition, structure, the plant is absolutely not demanding. Prefers loose, rich in nutrients, but also on clay or sandy loam will show good results.

Top dressing

Fertilizers (organic and mineral) are recommended to be applied with watering in spring time (from May).

Roseanne Geranium Border

The emphasis is on preparing geraniums for future long-term flowering. To do this, she needs manganese, phosphorus, potassium. Nitrogen should not be carried away. Rosanna looks most beautiful with a small volume of green mass and numerous flowers.

Wintering Features

For the winter, all dried parts are removed, and a layer of mulch is poured on top of all the bushes. In spring, the shelter is completely cleaned in April.

Note! The first buds may blossom in early June. Depending on the variety, flowering will last until the end of July or until the first frost. As the corollas wilt, new buds are expelled and opened.

Pruning

Formative pruning is carried out when the lashes fill all the free space, and the flower bed no longer looks neat. Usually, during the summer you only need to do 1-2 procedures.

How to breed

Cutting and sowing seeds are the main methods of reproduction. Cuttings are used on an industrial scale, while in the first year the young plant does not differ in splendor of flowering, and from the second year it pleases with numerous buds.

Seed germination

Buying seeds is hard. They are obtained only by crossing the original predecessors of the hybrid. The plant itself does not give them, therefore, it blooms almost the entire warm season.

If you are lucky enough to buy seeds, then you do not need to prepare them somehow. Sown on top of moist soil, slightly dusting with fine sand. Cover with a film and expect the emergence of seedlings (up to 14 days). The pick is carried out in the phase of 3-4 leaves.

Rooting cuttings

Planting cuttings are obtained when pruning shoots. The optimal size is no more than 10 cm and no shorter than 4-5 cm. The stalk is left to dry for a couple of hours, and then, dipped in root, is immediately planted in moist soil.

Important! For better and quick survival, you can cover the cuttings with a transparent cap. The roots grow back in a few days.

Transplanting geranium Rosanna to another place

Rhizome geraniums are transplanted only when there is not enough space. The plant is dug up with a lump of earth and transferred to a new place. A transplant is done from flowerpots when roots are shown from a hole in the bottom. The root system can be shortened if required.

Possible problems in growing

An unpretentious plant grows in one place year after year, requiring a minimum of attention to itself. Its main problems are related to lack or excess of attention.

  • Dumps buds and leaves. This happens with waterlogging (it is worth reducing watering), as well as with a lack of nutrients. Planting is fed with complex mineral fertilizer, in which potassium, phosphorus, manganese must be present.
  • The leaves turn pale. This happens due to lack of lighting. Neighbors can shade the plant too much, so you should prune them by opening the geranium to sunlight.
  • The tips dry on the leaves. This happens with a lack of moisture. It is necessary to water the plant well, and in the future not to allow the soil to dry out.
  • The lower leaves fall off. This process is natural. In case of loss of decorativeness, formative pruning is performed or perennial is rejuvenated, rooting its shoots (cuttings).
  • Pests. The appearance of insects on the bushes is quite likely. Geranium is affected by whiteflies, as well as aphids. Against pests, they are treated with drugs such as Actellik or Coman.
  • Other problems. Spots on the leaves are a symptom of a fungal disease. For treatment use spraying with solutions of fungicides.

Important! The decorativeness of the geranium Rosanne is its valuable merit, harmoniously complemented by its unpretentiousness and frost resistance. Year after year, her bush, like a real princess, will only become more beautiful.
