The real cucumber Claudius is now almost impossible to find, it was replaced by other hybrids. But when Claudia appeared, gardeners quickly tried out her taste and possibilities, she gained immense popularity. This is an early ripe, amicably fruitful hybrid, suitable for both greenhouses and open ground.

Description of cucumbers varieties Claudia

Cucumber Claudia is familiar to old gardeners. And now, when the seeds of many hundreds of varieties and hybrids are on sale, we recall Klavochka with aspiration.

Hybrid story

The story of Claudius cucumber is complicated. In the 1990s This hybrid appeared in our country, where I came from Holland, and our gardeners quickly liked it. Unfortunately, the time of this hybrid quickly passed. Young people no longer remember the story of how they chased the seeds of Claudia. But a few years ago, the seeds of this cucumber suddenly disappeared from the market. It turns out that they simply stopped producing, switching to an improved hybrid called Claudine.

Claude cucumber manufacturing company replaced us Claudia

Claudia even disappeared from the State Register of the Russian Federation, where it was entered in 1999. More recently, in 2015, its place in the list was taken by a cucumber called Claudia Agro. It is difficult to understand the intricacies, but judging by the description, this is not quite the sort, and many other analogues of Claudia were produced in our country. Cucumber Claudine, registered in Russia in 2008 at the request of Monsanto, really recalls the description of the old Claudia with its excellent taste. But Claudia Agro, proposed by the agricultural company "Search", is positioned as a cucumber of only good taste.

Description and characteristics of cucumber Claudius

The real Claudia from the 1990s. - a cucumber of excellent taste, without signs of bitterness, with a bright aroma. These cucumbers are beautiful both in fresh form and in pickling. They have no spikes, although the green slightly-ribbed surface is covered with characteristic small tubercles with a slight pubescence of white color. These cucumbers can be harvested throughout the summer: the hybrid is considered to be ripe, but many attribute it to medium-ripening cucumbers, although they can also claim later ones: fruiting continues until the frosts. The first fruits are picked in 40-45 days after the emergence of seedlings.

Claudia is practically not taken by sores, the lashes remain fruitful and healthy even with the advent of bad weather, when many varieties begin to suffer from powdery mildew and other fungal diseases. This cucumber is not afraid of slight shading, as a result of which it is grown not only in open ground and greenhouses, but even in indoor conditions, on the windowsill, including in winter.

The climate of the region does not play a big role: in greenhouses, Claudia can be grown everywhere, and in unprotected soil - where, in principle, cucumbers are planted.

The yield of the hybrid is high (you can collect a whole pound of greens from a square meter). He does not need pollinators in the form of flying insects: this hybrid is parthenocarpic. There are no empty flowers: a fruit develops from each flower. Claudia is referred to as bunch cucumbers, although in one "bunch" the number of greens rarely exceeds three. Cucumbers do not grow huge: they try to pluck them young, but if this is not done, growth stops at about 12 cm with a diameter of 3.0-3.5 cm. The weight of each cucumber is from 70 to 100 g. The pulp is pleasant, the seeds are small, including on adult fruits, are not felt when eating cucumbers. The skin is thin.

Claudia is a bunch variety, but in a bunch there are rarely more than three greenbacks

The crop is well stored and well transported, which, coupled with an excellent presentation, led to an interest in the hybrid not only on the part of amateurs, but also in the professional environment of farmers.

"Hooks" and other substandard make up no more than 10-12% of the total crop.

Claudia is an indeterminate hybrid, the growth of the main lash without the formation of a bush is practically unlimited and continues until the fall. The branching of the plant is weak, the stepsons hybrid does not give very much. Cucumbers easily climb the supports, which is important for greenhouse cultivation. The leaves are ordinary, large, bright green.

Appearance

Claudia Cucumber - one of those that are called green-despised. And if you still need to try out its crispy taste, then the appetite is already appealing: it is slender cucumbers of a pleasant color with velvety surface from small tubercles and pubescence.

The fruits of Claudia are smooth, green, beautiful

Advantages and disadvantages, differences from other varieties

Claudia cucumber consists entirely of virtues, otherwise the popular love for him would not be clear. Among the main advantages of the hybrid are:

  • high productivity;
  • great taste;
  • universality of use;
  • bunch type fruiting;
  • lack of barrenness;
  • excellent presentation;
  • the possibility of growing both in sheltered and in open ground;
  • unpretentiousness to conditions;
  • high pain tolerance.

When they talk about shortcomings, they recall that Claudia still has no immunity to such a viral disease as a mosaic. In addition, some lovers grumble that it is impossible to collect their seeds from her. But this is the scourge of any hybrid vegetables! For the adherents of their seeds, there are still good old varieties.

It is very difficult to compare cucumbers among themselves in our time: the number of varieties and hybrids exceeds all conceivable limits. How to compare the real Claudia? As already mentioned, it is very similar to Claudia Agro, but it tastes better and bears fruit a little earlier. Recently, the fashion for bunch cucumbers has gone, and their number has grown sharply. So, in recent years, hybrids Boy with a finger, Junior lieutenant, Kids on a branch and others have become incredibly popular. They are somewhat reminiscent of Claudius. However, the first of them has smaller greenery and, accordingly, lower productivity. The second one approaches in yield and is resistant to mosaic, and the kids on the branch are characterized by only good taste.

Another thing is super-beam parthenocarpic cucumbers, such as, for example, Hummingbirds or Machaon. They contain 5 ovaries and more in one bunch. But the taste of such modern hybrids is often described only as good, although, apparently, this direction of work of breeders has good prospects.

Features planting and growing varieties Claudia

Planting and growing a cucumber Claudius is quite simple. At least, there are practically no features in comparison with the cultivation of other varieties of indeterminate cucumbers.

Landing

Like any cucumber, Claudia can be planted in a bed of pre-grown seedlings or directly by seeds. When growing this hybrid, it should be borne in mind that even at the seedling stage, the plant gives powerful roots, so the seeds are sown in individual cups with a height of at least 12 cm. The timing of sowing seedlings is calculated based on the fact that at 25-30 days of age, planting seedlings in the garden will be required. Therefore, depending on the region and the choice between a greenhouse or a garden, the seeds are sown from early April to mid-May.

Since the seeds of Claudius cucumber (if they can be found) are sold already processed, preparation for sowing is not required. Growing seedlings takes place without features: shoots in a warm place in glass-covered cups appear after 4-6 days. 3-4 days they are kept in a well-lit place at a temperature of 16-18 aboutC, further cultivation is carried out at 22-25 aboutHappy and 16-18 aboutWith the night. Water 2-3 times a week, usually without feeding. Seedlings with 3-4 leaves are planted in the soil when it warms up to at least 15 aboutFROM.

It is best to grow seedlings of cucumbers in peat pots

Claudia is planted freely: no more than 3-4 plants are grown per square meter. In exactly the same way, direct sowing of seeds in the garden is also carried out. Without shelter, this can only be done with the onset of real heat: the air temperature during the day should be at least 20 aboutC. If in cups the seeds of Claudia are sown to a depth of 2 cm, then in the garden - a little deeper.

Care

Caring for Claudia is the most common. The soil should always be slightly moist and loose, without weeds. Feeding Claudia is given often, at least twice a month, but little by little. Before flowering, they are fed with urea, then with complex fertilizers or mullein infusions.

During the period of mass flowering, a good effect is given by spraying the leaves with the preparations of Bud or Ovary.

Claudius cucumber plant is formed into one stem. Stepsons pinch over the 3rd sheet. The growth of the main stem is limited at will: if it reaches too high a height (the ceiling of the greenhouse or the top of the trellis in the garden), and there is still a lot of time until autumn, it can be thrown and allowed to continue growing. Claudia herself clings to the trellis, but sometimes she needs to be helped by tying. Harvesting is carried out every 2-3 days, preventing cucumbers from overgrowing.

The formation scheme is not very simple, but if it is observed, the yield can still be increased

Reviews about Cucumber Claudius

After three years of experimenting, I came to the conclusion that the most delicious and long-playing is Claudia F1. Sometimes the cucumber smells of jasmine. Next comes Herman, a trouble-free variety.

I plant the cucumbers (several each) with different varieties of cucumbers, but I take the main part of the planting to the Claudia F 1 variety of cucumbers, which has remained unchanged for many years and never let me down. I like this variety because of its high yield, the cucumbers themselves are even, small, juicy, without bitterness. Attracted by the versatility of the use of fruits, they are suitable for all types of processing. This variety is resistant to a complex of diseases. My opinion is that the variety of cucumbers "Claudia F 1" is high quality.

And we had the best of the good old Claudius, almost all the cucumbers are affected by root rot, and at least something to her.

Cucumber Claudia - one of the most beloved among gardeners. It has a lot of advantages and is practically not marked by disadvantages. It is not difficult to grow it, there is only one problem: to get seeds.
